Seven Laurels

A Novel

By Linda Busby Parker

A Study Guide

Introduction:

Seven Laurels opens in 1956. That year is significant because the Supreme Court had recently (in 1954) settled the Brown v. Board of Education case that made segregated school illegal. Other court rulings prior to 1954 had argued that separate but equal schools for blacks and whites were legally acceptable in the United States. Historians argue that Brown v. Board of Education altered the course of American history and was a catalyst in the development of the Civil Rights Movement. The story of Brewster McAtee and his family opens in the very early days of the emerging Civil Rights Movement.

In 1956, when the story of Seven Laurels begins, many Jim Crow laws were in effect. Jim Crow laws (some were actual laws, others were merely customs or traditions in practice, especially in the south) sanctioned discrimination against African Americans. These Jim Crow laws included segregated schools, segregated restaurants, segregated public housing (including hotels), segregated buses and train cars, as well as segregated bathrooms and drinking fountains. In many cases the requirement for segregated facilities meant that African Americans had few, if any, public resources available to them. A local community, particularly in the south, may not have a hotel for African Americans, nor a restaurant, nor a public bathroom. In many cases, segregated facilities meant no facilities.

The effects of segregation become obvious in the opening chapter of Seven Laurels. Note that when Brewster sees the advertisement for the land on Ole Summit Highway, he realizes that the land is not listed in the newspaper under "Colored Property." He knows the owner may not sell the land to him because he is an African American. Even newspaper ads were segregated. This is the world that Brewster McAtee knows and understands in 1956 when the book opens.

Seven Laurels is a historical novel and also a family saga—the story of one man and his family. All of the events in the Civil Rights Movement portrayed in Seven Laurels are historically accurate. In a sense, the book provides an accounting of the Civil Rights Movement and its effects on one man, his family, and his community. It also tells the story of Brewster and Marlenna McAtee, and their son, Laurel.

Questions for Consideration and Discussion:

1.      Why does Brewster want to own land? What does the ownership of land represent to him?

2.      Brewster's younger brother, TeeBoy, is already dead when the book begins. How did his brother die? How does TeeBoy influence Brewster's decisions from the first chapter in the book all the way through to the last pages of the book?

3.      In chapters 1–6 of Seven Laurels, what are some of the indications that Brewster lives in a segregated world? Locate three examples of discrimination that you observe in these opening chapters. How does the discrimination take place? What are the general consequences of each of these particular acts of discrimination? What impact do they have on Brewster? What impact do they have on you as a reader?

4.      On more than one occasion, Deak Armbrecht helps Brewster. Do you think Deak's being a foreigner makes him more willing to assist Brewster? If so, why?

5.      How is Albert Mixon different from the rest of the African American community in Low Ridge, Alabama? Do your feelings toward him change from the beginning of the book to the end?

6.      Brewster's father, Tom, is a complex character. He hurts those around him, but is he also hurting? Do your feelings toward Tom change from the beginning of the book to the end? Ultimately, how do you, as a reader, evaluate Tom?

7.      In the African American community of Low Ridge, Alabama, Paulette's CafĂ© is a gathering place—a place for good food and for the exchange of community news. Are there places within your own community where people enjoy gathering and exchanging information? How important are these places to the well-being and the enjoyment of people who live in your community?

8.      How was Brewster's mother, Bess, affected by the segregated south? What were the various factors that led to her ultimate death?

9.      Mama Tee raises Brewster and his brother, TeeBoy. Describe Mama Tee. What traditions does she maintain? How does she influence Brewster? What are her special strengths?

10.  Matthew James is one of the dominant characters in Seven Laurels. What are some of his personal characteristics? Why is he important to his community? How is he important in Brewster's life?

11.  Marlenna Mixon, Brewster's wife, has been raised in Low Ridge and also in private boarding schools. Why do you think she wants to marry Brewster and live on his sixty acres of rural land on Ole Summit Highway?

12.  Anvil Thomas, Brewster's friend, is another complex character. How do your opinions of Anvil change from the opening pages of the novel to the final chapters? Is Brewster jealous of Anvil? How do Brewster's opinions of Anvil change? What events altered Anvil and brought about changes in him?

13.  The Civil Rights Movement explodes as part of the background of Seven Laurels. Locate three events of the Civil Rights Movement described in the novel. How do these events affect the characters in the novel?

14.  Marlenna and Matthew James are very directly involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Brewster holds back from the Movement. What is his rationale for holding back? Ultimately, how would you assess Brewster's contributions to changes in the south from 1956–1994?

15.  Why did Marlenna want her son, Laurel, to study classical music as well as the traditional music of African Americans—jazz and blues. How did Laurel take the white man's European music and the black man's rhythm and blues and turn them into new creations? Do you think Laurel had the potential for a brilliant career in music? If so, what do you imagine would have been Laurel's unique contributions?

16.  A sense of place is important in Seven Laurels. Describe each of the following locations:  Three Brothers shed and furniture store; Brewster's land and home on Ole Summit Highway; Our Savior's Home where Laurel and baby Tee were born; Limrick Road Baptist Church; Travis Peets home and property on Ole Summit Highway. Can you see these places? Can you smell them? What feelings do each of these places engender in you?

17.  Describe Travis Peets. What do you think shaped him as a man? If he afraid? If so, what does he fear? Is he angry? If so, what makes him angry? Is he pitiful? If so, what makes you feel sorry for him? At the close of the book, what are your final feelings toward him?

18.  Brewster and Marlenna see Tee differently after the death of Laurel. What are Tee's special gifts? Why had Brewster and Marlenna failed to see them?

19.  Describe Professor Rimes. What characteristics make him special? What did he symbolize for Laurel?

20.  Describe the relationship between Laurel and his father and between Laurel and his mother.

21.  Marlenna's feelings toward Ruby Peets are complex. Was Marlenna, prejudiced toward Ruby Peets? Was she afraid of Ruby? Did she distrust her? Did she dislike her? How would you summarize her feelings about Ruby?

22.  How do you feel about Brewster's tribute to his son—destroying Travis Peets old place and planting seven laurels. Was this a fitting tribute? What did this "new place" represent to Brewster and to the entire community of Low Ridge?

23.  In your opinion, outside of property and material possessions, what legacy did Brewster leave to his grandson, John Henry Harris (Jay)? What legacy did he leave to us all?

RE: New Meeting Time 5:30

I regret I won't be able to attend the meeting.  I'll be in New Orleans. My son-in-law's mother died Tues. just two month's after her husband's death. I'll be taking care of my granddaughter while my daughter and son-in-law are attending the funeral in Central America.

Have a good discussion.

What Difference Do it Make - new book by Ron Hall and Denver Moore

I know you all enjoyed and were inspired by Ron and Denver's book Same Kind of Different As Me.  They have now collaborated on a new book, What Difference Do it Make, that will be coming out Sept 29.  You can preview the book on google following this link:   http://books.google.com/books?id=0LnY3hxRqXgC&lpg=PP1&ots=BOGaNBk3mc&dq=what%20difference%20do%20it%20make&pg=PA10#v=onepage&q=&f=false

Also Wally Hebert, Hillene and Linda's brother, was so touched by their book that he wrote a song and wants to donate the proceeds to their foundation.  The rough cut of the song is attached and the lyrics are pasted below.  Ron and Wally have been in correspondence and there might be a place for the song in the movie that is being produced based on Same Kind of Different As Me.

Wally, I got it and just listened to it...BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you so much for this very thoughtful gift of your time and talent to honor Debbie, Denver and me....I will pass it along to our producers and see if there is something that can be done with it in the film.....blessings, ron

-------------- Original message from Wallace Hebert <wallyhebert@mac.com>: --------------

Ron, sorry it must not have come thru.  This is just me on garage band and needs to be faster and more instruments.  But easy chord progression.  It is a worship chorus in this arrangement.  Could write a bridge and drop a verse and make it more commercial.  Here goes again.  Wally

You?re the same kind of different as me
And the same Lord has taught us to see
How by life?s different roads He has brought us to be
The same kind of different as He.

To this world we don?t look the same
Still we?re called by the very same name
We are touched by a grace none of us could afford
You?re the same kind of different as me.

You?re the same kind of different as me,
And the same Lord has taught us to see
How through His mighty work we all stand here now free.
You?re the same kind of different as me.

You?re the same kind of different as me,
We belong to the same family
We are brothers and sisters and children of God
You?re the same kind of different as me.

You?re the same kind of different as me
And the same Lord has taught us to see
How by life?s different roads we?ve been brought here to be
The same kind of different as He.

Girlfriends Weekend Decorations/Costumes Planning

We would like you input and suggestions on our plans to represent the SWLA Pulpwood Queens at Girlfriends Weekend next January.  This month's author Elizabeth Berg of Home Safe, will be a keynote speaker.  However, she no longer does call-ins so we won't have her to chat with this time.

After meeting and discussions we have come up with a couple of simple ideas

Fri night - Celebration of Barbie's 50th Anniversary - to dress in the "hot pink bikini" printed T shirts, carry our pink PQ Bags, gold shoes/flipflops and the pink Fight Breast Cancer baseball caps --- we will be Malibu Barbie and let our "inner diva" shine

For Sat night - Celebration of Wizard of Oz 75th Anniversary - Somewhere Over the Rainbow  -We will  dress as witches with a purple spidery cab and black pants and crew neck long sleeve t-shirts  with possibly silver shoes since in the book the witch wore silver shoes - not ruby red.  Our color for the event is to be purple/amethyst.  Have a black cauldron, hopefully with dry ice , with figures of Wizard of Oz characters on sticks coming out of the cauldron.  Then somehow a rainbow arc that has "Brewing up a Rainbow of Books" for our table theme decor.  Purple tablecloth.

Any ideas you have would be most appreciated.

Last year several of the clubs brought personalized club bookmarks to handout to participants.  Any ideas or suggestions?

Just thought you  might like to know what we have been up to.

BTW  to those who are going :  Boo, Linda Breaux, Bev Martin, Bev Hill, and Laurie:   Linda B found the witches hats and bought them.(don't know price)  I have the spidery capes ($20 each plus tax)  and have ordered the bikini t shirts ($20 each plus tax and shipping).  We'll settle up later.

Re: Invitation to Allison's Wedding

How wonderful!!! I wish I were there to help celebrate. Please extend my best wishes to the beautiful bride.
My oldest son, Walter, started kindergarten today – yes, lots of crying over here, from me, thankfully and not him! - so I have been consumed by that, but happily so. Oh, the time goes so fast with them, doesn’t it?
Hope y’all are enjoying and savoring every minute of life.

Choice of Gemstone Color for GREAT BIG BALL OF HAIR BALL!

Our Gemstone for Girlfriends Weekend is amethyst/purple...I'm sure with Mardi Gras and LSU we can come up with some great table decorations and costumes!

Greetings fair Queens!

As I am working fast and furious on Girlfriend Weekend, I am now compiling a list of the gemstone colors you are choosing as your theme for the "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Wizard of Oz Theme at Girlfriend Weekend 2010, that's Saturday, January 16, 2010.

Yes, that's right, each chapter is to select a gemstone color for their theme and come up with some amazing costume, think Goodwill, Salvation Army, perhaps that old bridesmaid dress that you were never going to EVER wear again. We have so many chapters coming we will have duplicate colors but I know each will be amazing and unique.  Each chapter will get a table and you are to decorate to represent your chapter and to go with your them.  Now I know some of the chapters are thinking more a Wizard of Oz theme and girls, whatever, you go for it!

The Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys of East Texas have selected EMERALD and going for a Wizard of Oz theme too but I am taking us out of the competition as we were last year's winners.  We want everybody to have a chance at winning!

As you know who were there, The Pulpwood Queens of Katy, Texas BROUGHT IT ON last year for the contest and I can honestly tell, you, the were the "living" end.  Sorry girls I could not resist the pun, see photo attached!

More to come but let me know your gemstone color and are we going to have some BIG TIME FUN!

Truly,

Kat

The Pulpwood Queen

Discussion Questions for July - Bride Most Begrudging

Discussion Questions for Bride Most Begrudging by Deeanne Gist

1. Are there still marriages of convenience today? In America?

2. What exactly are we committing to when we say "I do."

3. When the better becomes worse, the richer becomes poorer, the health becomes sickness and we are simply too tired to deal with it anymore, what is the ripple effect when we walk out the door? Who and what is effected by an ending of a marriage? (Be careful not to gossip here.)

4. What is the ripple effect if we stay married? Is it worth it?
5. What characters in the Bible experienced circumstances so overwhelming they wanted to give up? (Make a list so you can use them for questions 6 & 7)

6. Of the characters that wanted to give up, but didn't: What might have happened if they HAD given up?

7. Of the characters that wanted to give up and did: What might have happened if they HAD NOT given up?

8. What are illustrations in the Bible where all hope is gone, yet God salvaged the situation(s) or the person(s)? Can God still do that today?

9. Drew could only be released from his fear of losing his loved ones when he released those loved ones to Christ. How can giving Christ permission to take away our loved ones be freedom?

10. If you were to go home tonight and give your spouse, your child(ren), your parents, your siblings to God, what exactly would that mean? What are you doing now that would have to change were you to do that ... I mean really do that?

11. Fear was an idol for Drew. He lived in it, wallowed in it, served it. What are some of the less obvious idols we have? (Something other than power, money, influence, approval, success)? Make a list for later use.

12. What lies does Satan perpetrate about our idols? They look so appealing on the surface, yet when we give into them, we become enslaved by them. List examples and illustrations (be careful not to gossip, this is to be a hypothetical discussion).

13. Look again at question #11. Are the things on your list sinful? Is it sinful to be rich? Is it a sin to want to be rich? When does a desire of our heart become a sin? (No short pat answers, like "when it becomes an idol." Duh. I'm looking for that point in which it shifts from a desire to a sin.)

14. On a piece of paper that you won't share with anyone, list your 5 top priorities (the things in your life that are most important to you) from greatest to least. Be brutally honest.

15. On that same piece of paper, make a pie graph illustrating how you spend your time in 12 hour day.

16. In the silence of your mind, compare your actions with your list of what's most important to you. Do you have idols that you didn't realize you had? (No need to share your answer. This one's for you and God.)

17. How can we today in everyday life place God first in all we do? Does that mean we have to be perfect? Is it possible to place God first? What are some everyday applications of putting God first?

Update from Laurie on MIssion Trip

Laurie!

What a surprise to hear from you!!  Glad you are safe and all is going well on the mission trip.  100 Bibles is incredible -- what a wonderful gift to be able to give  -- the Greatest Book ever written

I am forwarding your email to the Queens...our prayers are with you, the team, and the people

Much Love
Kay

hi kay <laurie here in <nicaragua.  <just wanted to let you know that we arrived and we purchased 100 bibles for a village in Matagalpa a village where we are building a church. The village has a ton of children.  We worked there all day! Whew.  Anyway, we signed the bibles on the cover in spanish from Abrazando Christo and the SW  La pulpwood Queens book club.  So be sure and tell the Queens, in a remote village in Nicaragua,  their funds have gone to good use.  I have pictures of the whole process!  See you soon.

Seattle Public Library

The Seattle Public Library posted this online regarding book discussion groups and how to read a book for discussion.  Thought it would be noteworthy.  The website is:  http://www.spl.org/default.asp?pageID=collection_readinglists_bookclub_howtos

Reading a Book for Discussion

Reading a book to discuss it is different from reading for pleasure.

Ask yourself questions, read carefully, and imagine yourself in the story. Think about the style and structure of the book. Does it have personal meaning for you?

  • Make notes and mark pages as you go. This may slow your reading, but saves time searching for key passages later.
  • Ask tough questions of yourself and the book.
  • Analyze themes. What is the author trying to say in the book?
  • Get to know the characters. Consider their faults and motives and what it would be like to know them.
  • Notice the book's structure. Do the chapters begin with quotes? How many people tell the story? Is the book written in flashbacks? Does the order make sense to you?
  • Compare to other books and authors. Themes often run through an author's works. Comparing one author's book with another's can help you decide how you feel about the book.
  • End of list

Leading the Discussion

  • Have 10-15 open-ended questions that can't be answered "yes" or "no." Or ask each group member to bring one discussion question.
  • Let the discussion flow naturally.
  • Push members beyond "I just didn't like it" statements. Ask them to describe why a book was unappealing. Books that inspire strong reactions - positive and negative - lead to some of the best discussions.
  • Balance the discussion between personal thoughts and responses to the book. Groups that spend a lot of time reminiscing or sharing personal reflections are no longer book discussion groups.
  • End of list

Learning More About an Author

Discussion leaders may want to bring background information about the author and book to a meeting. Some online resources are:

April Meeting - The Lost Art of Walking

Last night's April Meeting was highly celebrated with the announcement of her engagement by Queen Allison..wedding bells in Oct, and also the announcement of Queen Rachel's pregnancy...due in Nov

Everyone agreed that it was hard wading through The Lost Art of Walking by Geoff Nicholson. Entertaining at times, absurb at others and full of eccentric characters, I felt like I was reading just little vingettes with no theme or thread woven through the walking.

Instead of discussion questions, this time we did a Trivia Quiz designed by Queen Courtney. Divided into teams and laughed a lot! Suprisingly we had a 3 - way tie and had to go through several tie breakers before the winning team of Queen Linda B, Queen Sue, Queen Beverly and Queen Brenda came through and identified Old Leatherman.

Many thanks to the foods committee with outstanding dishes including two receipes from last month's book selection The Cracker Kitchen by Janis Owens. Queen Phyllis brought the Ramen ColeSlaw and Queen Erin made the strawberry pretzel dessert. Both great! Along with a lovely "Here Comes the Bride" cake, chips, dips and sandwiches provided by Queen Beverly and Queen Erins. Then washed down with the Mango/Rasberry Punch. Delicious!!

Plans are moving along for next year's Girlfriends Weekend. Queen Laurie has made reservations at the Excelsior Hotel. Registrations need to be sent in shortly. Queens Laurie, Beverly and Kay and definitely going!! Who else? Sign up now!!!

Next meeting will be at Queen Barbara's and the book selections is Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.

Nicaraguan Mission July 2009

Dear Pulpwood Queens and PQ Authors,

Last year we donated to the mission trip to purchase Bibles for the orphanage. We learned that monetary contributions were best because they could purchase the books  and Bibles in Nicaraugua, thereby helping the economy.  This year has been a huge economic upset to many in our country yet we  have countless taken-for-granted blessings compared to a 4th World Country.

I am forwarding  the letter/email from our Queen Laurie Cormier who goes on these missions and becomes our hands.  Besides talking about this year, she expresses her gratitude for our contributions last year.  We met many authors at Girlfriends Weekend this year who expressed interest in this mission.  Therefore I am also including you in this mailing.  If you wish to contribute the address is at the bottom of this email.  Thank you very much.

Please prayerfully consider our response for this year.  Some ideas suggested include to collect contributions like last year or to have a raffle,  a read-a-thon or other fund raiser. We can discuss it at our April meeting.  In the meantime, if you have some ideas and want to pursue them give me a call or email.

Remember reading is a blessing we share.

Queen Kay

Dear Friends -

Enclosed please find the article I wrote for the Catholic Page for the Newspaper here in Lake Charles.  Father Danny asked us to share some thoughts with others re our mission trip to Nicaragua - enclosed is what I wrote

"As a parent you want your child to grow up and become a successful person.  You want to show them everything that life has to offer and pray that they  find something in life that blesses them with a passion for life.  I had the opportunity to go with my son, PAUL, on a mission trip with Father Danny Torres to Nicaragua.  As a parent it was the most amazing experience to bring my son to witness the amazing transformation that God blesses us with by dong his work in a 4th world country.  You go there expecting to help and we did by a painting mission, doing medical mission work, a construction mission, vacation bible school, music ministry, feeding mission and sharing God's love with everyone we met.  However, the fruit of our labor blessed our lives everyday which is an unexpected blessing.  I feel so grateful, thankful and blessed by this experience with my 24 year old son.  It is by far the best thing I could have ever given him.  Laurie T. Cormier".

This year I will again go to Nicaragua on a mission trip with my son and 30 other missionaries.  I need your prayers.  We will leave on July 4, 2009 along with my son, PAUL, I will be joined by my niece, Kate Thibodeaux, and another family member, Charmayne Yelverton.

    We have two main fundraisers:
1) We sell raffle tickets and there will be only 500 sold.  They are $100 each. Drawing will be held on June 14th (1st prize $5,000.00; 2nd prize is $1,000.00; 3rd prize is $500.00) The money raised is for all supplies for the construction, painting, medical supplies, etc ---by purchasing the materials in Nicaragua it helps their economy. 5 people can purchase a raffle ticket together each paying $20.00 just write the five names on the stub - winners will share the amount won.

2) The Johnnie Thibodeaux Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, June 13th at Mallard Cove in Lake Charles.  The proceeds will benefit the boy's home.

I am asking for your assistance - there are several ways YOU can help.
1) Please pray for the safety of our mission trip
2) Please prayerfully consider making a donation to this GREAT, AMAZING Mission program
3) Please consider golfing in the tournament
4) Please pray for all people that we come into contact with for God to soften their hearts
5) Please forward this email on to others who might want to help us out
6) Please pray for us
7) Please pray for Father Danny Torres- a great man of GOD!

To make a donation or purchase a $100 raffle ticket please contact, Laurie T. Cormier (337) 436-5037 or mail a payment to Abrazando Cristo Mission Program, 418 Peake Street, Lake Charles, La  70601.

It is really hard to ask your assistance during this time in our economic troubles here at home but I can assure you if we are hurting here --it is much worse over there.  A 3rd world country is a very poor and impovished country -- the 4th world is the worst of the worst in terms of poverty. Nicaragua is a 4th world country.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayerful consideration of anything that you can do to lend us a hand.  I have been blessed so much by my work in Nicaragua and I want you to know that I will be praying for each of you and your families while I am there.

To all my book-loving friends - once again we will be purchasing bibles for the children and other books for them as well -- thanks to all my author friends and all the Pulpwood Queens who donated to the cause already!  You guys are awesome.

Please forward this email on to others.
