Our Head Queen Kathy Patrick has asked us to vote individually for the book we enjoyed the most this past year.  I have  copied her request and list of books below and the ones in red , are the the ones we read.  Just be prepared to vote your favorite at our meeting Wednesday.  From the list you can see there are many more books out there that we could read...keep your eyes open for ones you might want to read soon

November Meeting

For our November meeting we will meet at Queen Laurie's at 6:30 pm to discuss our next selection, The Alchemist by Paul Coelho. This inspirational book tells of the journey of Santiago. I'm sure we all have a "Story to Tell" about our own journey. Paul Coelho is an active internet blogger and a supporter of open sourcing through the net. You can access his website here

Discussion Questions:

1. At the start of his journey, when Santiago asks a gypsy woman to interpret his dream about a treasure in the Egyptian pyramids, she asks for one tenth of the treasure in return. When Santiago asks the old man to show him the path to the treasure, the old man requests one tenth of his flock as "payment." Both payments represent a different price we have to pay to fulfill a dream; however, only one will yield a true result. Which payment represents false hope? Can you think of examples from your own life when you had to give up something to meet a goal and found the price too high?

2. Paulo Coelho once said that alchemy is all about pursuing our spiritual quest in the physical world as it was given to us. It is the art of transmuting the reality into something sacred, of mixing the sacred and the profane. With this in mind, can you define your Personal Legend? At what time in your life were you first able to act on it? What was your "beginner's luck"? Did anything prevent you from following it to conclusion? Having read The Alchemist, do you know what inner resources you need to continue the journey?

3. One of the first major diversions from Santiago's journey was the theft of his money in Tangiers, which forced him into taking a menial job with the crystal merchant. There, Santiago learned many lessons on everything from the art of business to the art of patience. Of all these, which lessons were the most crucial to the pursuit of his Personal Legend?

4. When he talked about the pilgrimage to Mecca, the crystal merchant argued that having a dream is more important than fulfilling it, which is what Santiago was trying to do. Do you agree with Santiago's rationale or crystal merchant's?

5. The Englishman, whom Santiago meets when he joins the caravan to the Egyptian pyramids, is searching for "a universal language, understood by everybody." What is that language? According to the Englishman, what are the parallels between reading and alchemy? How does the Englishman's search for the alchemist compares to Santiago's search for a treasure? How did the Englishman and Santiago feel about each other?

6. The alchemist tells Santiago "you don't have to understand the desert: all you have to do is contemplate a simple grain of sand, and you will see in it all the marvels of creation." With this in mind, why do you think the alchemist chose to befriend Santiago, though he knew that the Englishman was the one looking for him? What is the meaning of two dead hawks and the falcon in the oasis? At one point the alchemist explains to Santiago the secret of successfully turning metal into gold. How does this process compare to finding a Personal Legend?

7. Why did Santiago have to go through the dangers of tribal wars on the outskirts of the oasis in order to reach the pyramids? At the very end of the journey, why did the alchemist leave Santiago alone to complete it?

8. Earlier in the story, the alchemist told Santiago "when you possess great treasures within you, and try to tell others of them, seldom are you believed." At the end of the story, how did this simple lesson save Santiago's life? How did it lead him back to the treasure he was looking for?

• What happens in life when one actually achieves their personal legend?
• What was the point of the boy becoming the wind?
• What is your personal legend? Is it important to have one?
• Does the simplistic and primitive style of this book add or detract from the main goal, what ever you think the main goal is?
• What does it mean to say "the universe conspires to help you achieve what you want"?

Events of Interest

Thank you, Queen Tracey, for hosting our September meeting.  It was another fun-filled evening with stimulating conversations, intelligent insights.  I must say that after our discussion and talking with author Doug Crandell, I have a much better understanding of the book, Flawless Skin of Ugly People, and am looking forward to reading the second book, Hairdos of the Mildly Depressed.  I want to find out what happens when he opens the door.
 
Our next book selection will be Singularity by Kathryn Casey.  We'll meet on October 29 at Queen Linda Ory's home in Lake Charles.  Our Food committee will be Queens Linda O, Boo, Lea and myself.  Discussion Questions are posted below.
 
Queen Allison informed us about the Read for the Record program and handed out info about the project.  If any of you participated please let us know about it and if you have a picture that would be great also.
 
For those reading ahead our next selections will be Nov 19  The Alchemist by Paul Coelho meeting to be at Queen Laurie's.  And in January will be From the Heart: Seven Rules to Live By, by Robin Roberts hosted by Queen Kay.  December we will just have a  Christmas gathering, date to be decided at our next meeting, hostess will be Queen Brenda V. 
 
Girlfriends Weekend will be Jan 15-19 and we have Queens Laurie, Boo, Beverly M, Delaune' and myself signed up thus far. 
 
The Fall Womens Conference will be this coming Thursday Oct 16 at the Lake Charles Civic Center.  Again this year they have numerous workshops ranging from health, diet, grieve, career, family and business. Keynote speaker will be Debbie Allen.  Also our Member Queen Laurie will be leading one of the workshops dealing with grief.  The website for further information and registration is  www.womenscommissionswla.com  I plan to attend.  Perhaps I'll see you there!

Book Club Discussion Questions for SINGULARITY

1) What is it about law enforcement that drew Sarah to a career as a Texas Ranger? How do you view her initial contribution as a profiler to the Lucas investigation?

2) Do you think it's difficult for women in law enforcement? Is it still a man's world? Is this unique to law enforcement or are women still treated differently in the workplace?

3) In Sarah's world there are turf wars between agencies, from the local police departments to the rangers to the FBI. Is that unusual, or do you see examples of it in your everyday life?

4) Sarah is still grieving for her husband and appears ill equipped to handle Maggie's pain. When, if ever, does that change? How could Sarah have reacted or what could she have done that might have made a difference for her daughter?

5) Murder investigations today are a combination of forensics and old-fashioned police work. In the Lucas case, what plays the most important role? Or are both facets equally important?

6) How do you view the relationship between Sarah and David? Is it one of convenience/opportunity or do you believe it has possibilities for the future?

7) Does Sarah do the right thing when she follows her conscience and goes public? What would you have done?

8) Do you believe evil exists in the world? What do you see as the primary factors that turn individuals into monsters like the killer in the book?

9) Does Sarah set into motion the events at the end of the book? Should she have seen them coming? Could she have prevented Maggie's and Nora's involvements?

10) At the end of the book, Sarah is momentarily reluctant to pull the trigger with her daughter watching. Is this a sign of weakness or something else?

2006 Read for the Record Press Release:
Members Participate in Jumpstart's Read for the Record Campaign.
On August 24, 2006, the Junior League of Lake Charles, Inc. joined with Starbucks to promote literacy by participating in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record Campaign, a national campaign designed to engage adults and children in setting the world record for the largest shared reading experience ever.  The Junior League of Lake Charles, Inc., along with Starbucks, supported this campaign on August 24, 2006, by holding reading events throughout Southwest Louisiana.  More than two thousand elementary school children were read to by volunteers, including members of the Junior League of Lake Charles, Inc., Mayor Randy Roach, Mayor Ron Leleux, Sheriff Tony Mancuso, John Bridges, and more.  All of the books were purchased through the Junior League of Lake Charles, Inc. and donated to each school. 

 Jumpstart is a national early education organization that works toward the day that every child in America enters school prepared to succeed.  The Jumpstart’s Read for the Record Campaign was developed because of striking disparity in early education resources.  For more information about Jumpstart, visit its website at www.jstart.org.  For more information about Jumpstart’s Read for the Record campaign, visit www.readfortherecord.org.

Call for help from Done in a Day Chairperson:
Read for the Record is fast approaching on Thursday, October 2nd.  We will be reading in local schools around the community.  If you are available during the day and would like to read please contact me and let me know.  In that email also inform me of the times that would be most convenient for you to read.  I will assign your times accordingly.  Just to let you know, last year some people even read on their lunch hour. 

Another thing I would like from you: In previous years we have had some local celebrities read at the schools, such as the mayor, KPLC personnel, etc.  If you know of anyone in the community that would like to read please let me know.  I would love to have some extra volunteers for this project.

PQ Philosophy

My friends,
 
Some of you may not follow Kathy Patrick's blog so I wanted to share her philosophy about the purpose of Pulpwood Queens. 
 
It's humbling to realize how many people all over this great nation of ours stretch out a helping hand and I do mean stretch.  How many of us have a budget that has very little "extra" yet we give to those without because we are blessed with so much.  We have roofs over our heads, running water, a comfortable bed, more clothes than we will ever wear, choices in what food we will eat.  What abundance we have!!!
 
Thank you for all that you do to help others!  You are a wonderful group of Queens!!

Queen Laurie is once again leading us to reach out to others through volunteering with the Red Cross. Below is an email she sent to the Connected Catholics Service Project volunteers. She thought some of the Pulpwood Queens might be willing and available to help serve food to evacuees or help with future projects. "Thanks for signing up to help as part of the CONNECTED CATHOLICS SERVICE PROJECT. We are not really prepared to have a project but I saw that the RED CROSS needed volunteers today in the paper. I called and will be working on Saturday (September 20) from 7:30 - 1:30 at the Maplewood Baptist Church in Sulphur on Maplewood Drive serving food. If you are interested in helping see Jim and tell him you are there to help. I will be there. Hope this email finds you all doing well and thanks for signing up for future service projects. "

Re: Lavender Queen will meet Head Queen

Hi all:

I just wanted to tell you that I've e-mailed Kathy about maybe doing an
outing into the Hill Country the Friday before the TExas Book Festival.
I don't know if any of you are planning to attend (it's NOv. 1 and 2 in
Austin). I thought it would be fun if the lavender queen led some
pulpwood queens on a tour of some of the Hill Country sights mentioned
in my book. Could be a blast. I'm still waiting to hear Kathy's
thoughts, but I thought I'd see if there would be any interest from you
ladies if it could be put together. Are any of you planning to go to
the TX book festival? If so, is it realistic that any of you could go
galavanting around the Hill Country on Friday, Oct. 31st, during the
day?

Your publicist just emailed me that she is calling about our Pulpwood Queen convention, which we call our Girlfriend Weekend Author Extravaganza!  I am so hoping this is a confirm as this is going to be the biggest year ever!  With now more than 200 chapters starting and running, they are all clamoring to sign up for the Early Bird Special.  For Pulpwood Queen members, the price for the V.I.P Pulpwood Queen Package to all events, to days of author panels, two nights of entertainment including our Grand Finale our GREAT BIG BALL OF HAIR, it’s now $200.  Non-members it’s always $100 higher and the price goes up $50 each month until $350 at the door, $450 for non-members, so sign up now.

I have somewhere around 50 authors, speakers, celebrities, and musicians who will be featured at this weekend so know that this will be the best time and best money you have ever spent!

Now Delaune’, my sister had one of those trees fall during Hurricane Rita so I totally understand the devastation!  My thanks is that everyone is safe and well, things are just things and though devastating as far as repairing financially, life is about relationships.  Prayers to you and yours and I have a whole new perception of life since the hurricanes, I am investing in my family and friends as I sure can’t take my books or things with me. I am just hoping that heaven is just one great big library filled with all my lost cats, family, and friends.  Oh, and being able to eat anything I want without the fear of weight gain, ha ha ha!

 

Onward and upward Pulpwood Queens, there is power in the good book, great books, and our friendships.  I just know that the more of us there are, the more we can rock this world into being a better place by creating a world of readers!

That was so kind of you to send out that note. My Aunt had a huge live oak fall on her house. The tree company came at 8:00AM with a crew of eight.  They finished removing the tree around 5:00PM.  The foreman said that he had never worked with a tree like that.  He estimated that it weighted 30 tons and that 60,000 pounds of pressure had been on her roof since the tree fell.  He said that if the house had not been built as solidly as it was, the pressure of the tree would have crushed it. So we are VERY grateful that she wasn’t hurt. That was terrifying. I am saying more prayers that Ike goes away or dies down or something. Thank you again, Kay, that was so dear of you. Gustav Reports

Please add a prayer for the family of our member Delaune` Michel, whose family was hit hard by Hurricane Gustav in Baton Rouge.

Delaune` hope they recover quickly.

Also, our member Beverly Martin's daughter and son live in Baton Rouge and have been without power since Saturday.

I think we all breathed a sigh of relief and gratitude that our corner of the state was spared.

Girlfriends Weekend

It's great to be back home after evacuating and it's even more wonderful to NOT have any damages. We are all thankful. And we continue to pray for those who got hit hard.

The Pulpwood Queen Has a NEW Mission!

Writing my first book was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. First, because it was my story of my life in books, that made it highly personal, and second, because I had to do it while working full time and being a wife and mother.

What to tell, what not to tell. I battled for six years, internally, always with the thought in mind that everything I said would have consequences. This was to be my new baby. And when my baby was born I knew that my life would never be the same as it had when I had my first two children. What I went through pushed me to the limits on what I thought I could bear, but the pain and suffering I went through the birth process of my book made me forget everything when I received my first printed copy.

What joy! My story was to be told and to me it was beautiful.  When the book was published I turned my book over to God. God is love and he would guide me through my publishing angst days ahead. What I did not know is that God had a bigger plan for me than declaring my life not only a reading life, but a writing life. One that has left me with this feeling of wonder and anticipation, much as the delight of sitting down with a new book that I have waited with bated breath to read. Oh, the joy of opening a new book to the first page. Yes, besides reading and writing AND promoting literacy, a new page has opened for me in life and one that involves a new mission. They call it Newgate.

Books have taken me many wondrous places. But one book in particular took me to a fundraiser for Newgate Mission, a mission whose sole purpose is to help people get back on their feet with a Christian foundation. Someone gave me the book "Same Kind of Different as Me" by Ron Hall and Denver Moore when I was on book tour. "You have to read this book, Kathy!" How many times had I heard this before but I always listen as the best books I have ever read have been presented to me by that word of mouth.

I missed church over this book. I began to read it after work on Saturday and woke Sunday early to finish the book. It was soon time for church but I was lost in the story. So lost, tears streamed down my face as I finished the last page. I had to write the author immediately and I did, via email. Ron Hall called me personally right back and we began a conversation.I felt really bad missing church. I explained to my minister, Allison and gave her the book to read. She grabbed my arm after reading the book and told me she would have missed church too.

The book is just that good. What I did not know would happen would be that soon I would travel with my daughters in tow to Longview, Texas to hear Ron Hall and Denver Moore speak about their book as a fundraiser for Newgate Mission. I believe over 2,000 people flooded into the doors of T.J. Field to hear the authors speak. It was standing room only and at the last minute the organizers added a front row and led us standing in the back to sit right in front of the podium. I met there some of my other Pulpwood Queen Book Club members who had brought their families.To read a book is one thing, but to have an author or authors speak of their book is another. This brings their story entirely into focus. I have never been so moved. You just have to read the book.

Afterwards, I spoke to Ron and Denver and leaving I noticed volunteers standing to each side behind tables of displayed information brochures on Newgate. I have to admit I had never heard of the mission before that evening. I paused as a young woman asked me if I would be interested in volunteering to help at the mission. Funny, I stopped and asked what kind of help did they need? That conversation has now led me to leading a life writing class at Newgate Mission.

I go once a month to the mission and I can tell you my life will never, ever be the same.Yesterday was just the third time I have gone to Newgate. As I write, I sit in disbelief at what happened at yesterday's visit. I had both my daughters, age 14 and 18 in tow. I firmly believe that you want to teach your children what is important in life, you show them. Actions do speak louder than words.

We arrived to find a wooden cross propped against the outside door that was covered with hand written messages and stuffed animals. We entered and anxiously could not wait to introduce the girls to the incredible men and women who come to the mission for my class. My youngest had come with me the last time and she had begged me to bring her again. She too had experienced the same joy I had from getting to know these people. That time 19 men and one woman had showed up for the class. We even took photos at the end that were posted last month on my blogsite, www.pulpwoodqueen.com.

This time only five were in attendance but the stories began to unfold. A man after the class stopped me to show what he had written. He had begun his life story and then he told me why he had to tell his story. What he told me will be the story that I will never forget for the rest of my life. I can still see his eyes; the pain, the want and the need to have someone hear his story. He told me that from the first time he heard me speak, he knew that I was someone he could trust. I have never been given such a better gift.

What I did not understand as I volunteered to come to the mission once a month to lead this class would be what I would receive. I thought of this venture as one where I would be giving the giving. As the girls and I left I was filled with such a sense of what a gift this class was going to be for my life that I was blind sighted by what I learned next. Remember, the cross by the door as we entered the mission? I asked the minister in charge, Kent, what the cross was all about as we exited the building. He told me that a woman had been shot and murdered there the night before. She had been sleeping on a bench by the back door. Can you imagine?

My daughters and I stared in shock. Who knew such a world existed. We know now.As I write this column my oldest daughter, called out to me that Newgate Mission was on the news about the murder. Our eyes have been opened wide. I always knew that reading could take me places I never dreamed but to learn that reading could also lead me to a higher purpose? Yes, it can, it can indeed. What a wonderful world it would be if everyone would read voraciously. What roads reading may take us, what journeys, what joys!

May reading lead all of you to a higher purpose too. I assure you my life has been blessed from being a reader. Now let my actions speak louder than those words.
