March Meeting news

We had a great meeting for March. Thanks to Grace for hosting and to the food committee Rachelle Wilson, Linda Todd and Linda Breaux .

I especially appreciated the technical assistance of Rachel, Allison and Erin to get us hooked up and online for the SKYPE with our author of the month Jenny Gardiner.  She is passionate about doing more for e-publishing for emerging authors and will be sending us more info as it develops.  Also she did introduce her parrot Gracycie to us who even spoke a bit.  

Members voted on the books for the coming year.  Thank you Tracey for tabulating the results!  I couldn't have done it without you.  Those who emailed their choices had their votes counted also.   Choosing from Kathy Patrick's list of monthly selections and bonus book selections we came up with the following list.  Please note some date changes for our meetings.

Creative Ideas

I hope I am back in town for awhile :)

Bev Martin and I were discussing over coffee this morning that we need to come up with our story for Girlfriends Weekend soon so we can begin thinking about costumes and table decorations and oh yes some kind of skit.

We looked at story books and thought of Mother Goose and different nursery rhymes; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Shakespeare;  mystery writers; Clovis Crawfish and friends;    Ya Ya Sisterhood;     We need ideas and costuming and decorations and skits...put your creative thinking caps on!!!

If you are interested in going next January, please let me know because we need to get together soon to begin our plans.  Those of us who went last year have already made our reservations at The Excelsior Hotel in Jefferson, TX  so if you are even thinking about going you need to make your reservations (you can always cancel later)

It was also soon be time to send in our advance $150 registration.  It's easier if you make your check to Kathy Patrick, and give them to me and I send them in together (I copy the checks and keep a record because Kathy gets overwhelmed with stuff).

Mark you calendar for the third weekend in January 2011, that's January
14 -16, for our 11th annual Girlfriend Weekend. And as always, if you are a Pulpwood Queen member, we offer an Early Bird Special of $150 for the Pulpwood Queen Weekend Package which includes: 2 full days of author panels, two full nights of literary entertainment including our infamous GREAT BIG BALL OF HAIR BALL, plus an OFFICIAL 11th Girlfriend Weekend t-shirt, and publisher giveaways. Our theme will be TIARA WEARING AND STORY SHARING with the Ball theme being your favorite story book character or book characters for Girl Group competition.

Girlfriends Weekend Pulpwood Queens Style

Pulpwood Queens are about reading and friendship, about encouraging others to be involved in life, about communication through the written word.  And it's about having passion and enjoyment for bringing words to life.  That's what happened at the 10th Anniversary celebration of the Pulpwood Queens Girlfriends Weekend in Jefferson Texas. 

The Wizard of Oz walked out of the pages and assumed new interpreations....there were the Pink Cowardly Lion, Pink Dorothy, Pink Tin Man, Pink Scarecrow and other pinkly supporting roles for Glinda and Oz.  Dorothy's were there with ruby slippers.  The poppies were blooming, the Blue Bird were flying over rainbows and of course Queen Kathy Patrick came in as a Tornado with author Ad Hudler as OZ.  What delight to see characters spring to life and have fun...great fun dancing and laughing and enjoying being more than words on a page.

How many high points can one weekend have?  With Kathy leading the charge you have renown author Pat Conroy of South of Broad The Great Santini and The Prince of Tides, charming us with stories of his life and how he became a writer as well as a bit about being a Paw Paw with his daughter Melissa Conroy who wrote Poppy's Pants.  An enchanting story that my granddaughters loved.

There was Jamie Ford of The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet who told of his love of Love Stories and being a hopeless romantic.  After reading Hotel, I can understand that!  I loved the story and loved talking with Jamie about the book when he did an author call-in....prior to hitting the best seller list!!

How about when I ran into Elizabeth Berg of Home Safe at the historic Excelsior Hotel when we had our morning coffee and ended up riding together to the convention center.  A charming lady who told us about the meaning of home, that place where your heart rests.  We all enjoyed her book and appreciated her author cal call-in!!

Our special Linda Busby Parker of Seven Laurels was there with her Christmas anthologies.  Our member Hillene Deaton sent one of her special quilts via Beverly Martin to present to her.  What a gracious lady she is and has written about it on her blog.

I joined the Head Queens to read passage from our favorite books this year, remember it was unanimous to choose kathryn Casey's Blood Lines, I hope others were intrigued and ready to read it. It was great to see Kathryn again, feel like she's one of us!

So who else was there....my goodness authors everywhere, and I cam home with books by Deva Gnatt, Suzanne Arruda,  Sam Barry, Kathleen Kaska, Ad Hudler, ML Malcolm, Robert LeLeux, Nicole Seitz new friends and authors

As well as enjoying the hijinks of River Jordan and Shellie Tomlinson, can you imagine the two of them on tour together!!

Great time by all and we''ve already made reservations for next year!

It was great to have Kathryn as our special guest.  I can't wait to read the next one in the Sarah Armstrong series, Cross Roads, when it comes out toward the end of next year.  Also, for those who weren't there, one of her true crime novels has been picked up by Lifetime channel and it may be coming out next fall also.  Just keep looking for her stuff, I think more and more people are becoming fans.

Everyone was mesmerized by Kathryn Casey as she shared tales of her writing life as a true crime author and now a new voice in fiction through her Texas Ranger Sarah Armstrong. Her recent book, Blood Lines, was our November selection, an eagerly awaited sequel to Singularity.

Kathryn shared with us how she has managed to weave tidbits of true crime stories into the fictional crimes. Her in depth interviewing of celebrities gave her insight into the mind of a celebrity who is being stalked. Kathryn puts you into the mind of the character and it feels just right.

We were all honored to have her share an evening with us, after being a presentor at the annual Bayou Writers Conference in Lake Charles. Kathryn Thank you!

Attached find:  a jpeg of the front book cover. You might want it for some promotional purposes. I've also included a double spread of front and back cover—this is more for your own eyes because you probably can't include the front/back in any kind of promotion.  Also, attached find a brief press release—actually, more a books store release. 

 

Here are some dates for readings/signings.  Thursday, December 3^rd,   5-7 p.m.—reading in Dothan, Alabama at Barnes & Noble; Friday, December 11, from 5-7 p.m. reading at Page & Palette Book Store in Fairhope, Alabama , Saturday, December 12, reading at Barnes & Noble in Mobile at 2 p.m.  Kathleen Thompson has a book signing on for early December at Little Professor Book Store in Birmingham.  Kathleen and Liz McCormick will handle that one.  Little Professor is a small store.  We want as many as possible to participate in Dothan, Fairhope, and Mobile, however.  I know many of you are planning on being present at the Mobile reading—that's great!

 

I'll be the guest at a Mobile book club on Monday, December 16. That book club adopted the 2008 Christmas book as their November 2009 read. It's a good-sized book club too!   A Sunday school class at Springhill Presbyterian Church asked me to speak on  Sunday, December 20.  They're interested in all the different perspectives on the Christmas season as evidenced in the Christmas books.  I think there I'll talk more about personal essays, but I'll also incorporate several short stories.  I spoke to a book club in southwest Louisiana on October 28 and had an opportunity to mention the Christmas books. So, opportunities abound everywhere! 

 

The books are rolling off the press as I write, but I won't have them in my hands for several more days.  Our printer is in Minnesota.  They are coming to you—priority mail-- as soon as I receive them.  More on other readings and other info. as I have it.  I've posted a couple of more excerpts on the blog today.  www.lindabusbyparker.us       All my best to everyone!
