Our meetings are generally the last Wed of the month at 5:30 at Stellar Beans in downtown Lake Charles.  Val will send an email about a week prior to the meeting for you to respond with your meal order if you will be attending.

Talked with Kathryn Casey today and she can come  Aug 24.  She wants to do something at the library and then meet with us in the evening.  or pack as many things /signings as possible in an overnight trip.

GFW Registration for Jan 2012

Kathy has begun accepting reservations for GFW Jan Jan 15-18, 2012.  It isn't setup online yet but you can call her individually if you want to put it on your credit card or if you want to give me a check I can send them in at the same time.  Very important to keep copies of your receipts.  Kathy has a hired a new person part time to help with the registration process so be certain you keep confirmation of your payment!

This year the total package with will include the Authors Dinner and Sat Luncheon  is $350. 

Please let me know if you are planning to attend!   We did go ahead and reserve our rooms from last year so if more want to attend this year will need to make room reservations also.

Last Night's Meeting

Thanks to all you Queens who came to our meeting last night and participated in a wonderful reflective discussion.  I am amazed at how we can all read the same book and bring out different parts.  I always come home from our meeting fed with good friends, good food and good discussions.

Didn't you just love Kathy's interview with Fannie Flagg?  How about that theme song for her new show  Beauty and the Book (if you weren't there you can view it at www.beautyandthebookshow.com )  Wild Wicked and Free???  She is a dynamo.

It seemed that we all enjoyed reading I Still Dream About You, and were surprised at the amount of reflective  insight we gained and respect for each other.

Several of our new members told me they were reading Kathy's book The Pulpwood Queen and after chatting with her last month via SKYPE, were really enjoying the book and could hardly put it down.

All new members will now be receiving a copy of her book instead of the T shirt.  That will have to be purchased separately.

Speaking of purchases,  it was a unanimous vote last night to have each active member contribute $10 towards club expenses (bookplates, printing, postage).  Most everyone who was there last night went ahead and paid, those of you who weren't can pay at our March meeting. 

Val said she appreciated everyone emailing her back with their food choices, made it very easy for her to prepare.  Will do the same for next month.  If you don't get your email be sure to call her with your order.

If Holden Caulfield Were In My Classroom by Bernie Schien. was a book I recently picked up at Girlfriend Weekend after hearing him speak about his successes in the classroom.  Funny, charming, heart-warming Bernie seemed to make learning fun.  Reading his book I learned how challenging his teaching philosophy is.

What would you do if you had Holden Caulfield in your room?  Would you send him to the principal’s office or would you strive to discover who He is?  What makes him tick? Why he behaves the way he does?  What is happening in his life?  What have been his disappointments and joys?  These are the kinds of questions that master teacher Bernie Schien asks (if only in his mind and heart) of each of his students.  He gets to know students as persons and then helps them to relate to each other in meaningful ways.  His grasp of group dynamics is inspiring and his implementation brings out the student.

As a tutor and former teacher, I understand his development of the individual for I have seen this evolve with my own students.  It is impossible for students to learn in hostile environments, which could be playground bullies, boyfriend/girlfriend issues, racism and prejudice, abusive home life, etc.  Bernie Schien helps the student to face the issues, to confront the problem and work to a solution.  All in a loving caring challenging manner.  My hat is off to Bernie, wish I’d had a teacher like him!

Reminder for GFW Tickets

Just a reminder that GFW tickets will go on sale tomorrow 2/1 at Kathy's website  www.beautyandthebook.com  tomorrow.  This year it's $250 for the full package from Thurs night author dinner through Sun afternoon film festival.  All registrations will be made online this year so each person will have to make their own reservations.

First Info on Registration for GFW 2012

Here's the first info for registration for next year's GFW.  Early Registration is $250 but looks like she's included the events that we've been paying extra for so it's about the same amount.  Since registration is online this year, we will have to each make our reservations, I think.  I went to her website and she doesn't have the registration form online yet.  Will let you know when she does.

JANUARY 12 - 16, 2012

12th Anniversary Girlfriend Weekend as we hold this event the same weekend as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day so we have a three day holiday to attend, come early to check out Jefferson and stay an extra day too. This event will SELL OUT FAST as have a waiting list of girls who could not get into Girlfriend Weekend that asked to be the first to sign up for next year. Early Bird Tickets NOW for ALL Events ares $250 which includes Author Dinner, Friday Day panels and Friday Night Entertainment, Saturday Day Panels, Saturday Author Luncheon, Saturday Night "Great Big Ball of Hair" Ball, Sunday Film Festival. Packages will be SOLD FIRST and then if we have any other space at the festival, individual tickets will be sold at the door.


The THEME this year for the "Great Big Ball of Hair" Ball is "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! WELCOME TO THE GREATEST "BOOK" SHOW ON THE EARTH!"
I'm thinking with all these great books to inspire us, Sara Gruen's WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, Frank Delaney's VENETIA KELLY'S TRAVELING SHOW, after all, running Girlfriend Weekend is like a three ring circus, as ever on with the show!

ALL EVENTS will be held at the Jefferson Tourism and Transportation Convention Center in historic Jefferson, Texas. We have 350 packages that we can sell for each event except CRUISE so plan to book early for your package and book your rooms in Jefferson, Texas too! Book Signing at Stellar Beans

Hey Pulpwood Queens,

Our club member, Val Smith, is hosting a book signing on Saturday Feb 5 from 11 am to 2 pm for two local authors Linda LeBert and Brian Harrell.  Both books will be available for purchase and signing following a brief presentation.  Both books are written by local authors....and I hope Val has coffee and beignets, she usually does on Sat mornings.

A joint book signing by Dr Brian Harrell and Dr Linda LeBert at Stellar Beans Coffee Shop located at 319 Broad Street in Lake Charles.  It is an adorable shop with drinks ,  food ; an excellent atmosphere.   Both books are based on true stories.  Books will be available for purchase and signing.

We will both do a short presentation and then sign books.

Brian Harrell's Book:  Crimson Stained the Bayou Pines: A Novel of Political Struggle in the Deep South.  It can be found online at Books-a-million, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.  It is a story that revolves around the struggles of Walter Dietz to establish the Socialist Party in Louisiana in the early 20th century.  He was also very active in the establishment of many of the trade unions in Lake Charles at the time, including the lumber mills.  His work ultimately in defiance of the established powers at that time--namely, John Henry Kirby.  The struggles between those loyal to the unions and those loyal to the lumber mills transformed into a series of lock-outs and labor strikes known as "The Southwest Louisiana Timber Wars," and culminated in an event known as "The Grabow Massacre."  This was a shootout between the union members and the mill workers that lasted for over 45 minutes and transpired just south of DeRidder.

Linda LeBert's Book:  In the Shadow of My Brother's Cold Blood- Dave Hickock never pulled the trigger of a gun or held a knife to murder another person, but he was sentenced to a lifetime of shame, ostracism, guilt, and psychological anguish because of the actions of one man-his brother. GFW will  be the 3rd weekend in January 2012.  Jan 19-22 Who is interested in coming?

I will be leaving Jefferson early in the morning and will reserve rooms before I leave if anyone wants to come next year.

LOL - now that I have rested for two days  I feel more like coming back --geesh was I worn out slept for 12 hours monday then took about a 3 hour nap.
